The Daguerreian Society invites authors to submit original papers that address and advance the understanding and appreciation of 19th-century photography (up to 1885) for consideration for publication in the Daguerreian Annual. Potential topics include the art, history, social impact, and practice of the daguerreotype and other photographic processes of this era. The Daguerreian Annual has been published since 1990 and is distributed as a member benefit to the members of the Society. The Annual can be found as a reference work in many special collections libraries including the Getty, the American Antiquarian Society, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and the William L. Clements Library. Authors whose articles are accepted for inclusion will be given a free copy of the Annual.

Selection Process for Articles

The Annual is professionally edited and articles are selected for publication by the Publications Committee of the Daguerreian Society after removal of identifying information about the author. The Committee bases its decisions on the following criteria:

  • Scope and Quality of Research
  • Contribution to Existing Knowledge
  • Potential for Future Development/Seeding New Research
  • Clarity of Writing
  • Use of Original Historical Sources
  • Use and Interpretation of Photographs as Primary Source Documents.

Potential contributors should submit a 300-word abstract and 3 to 6 images for feedback from the Publications Committee prior to a full submission. Do not submit completed articles.

Requirements for Articles

  • Authors are responsible for securing all necessary rights and releases for images used as illustrations.
  • Authors must grant permission for both one-time print publication and for future electronic access.
  • Papers must be in English and may range in length from 500 to 8,000 words.
  • Papers should be submitted electronically with high resolution digital images submitted via WeTransfer.com. Request complete Writers’ and Image Submission Guidelines prior to submitting articles.

Requirements for “Portfolio” Submissions

“Portfolio,” a popular section of each Daguerreian Society Annual previously titled “Members’ Favorites,” offers the chance to share information about favorite images. These brief articles (1–2 pages of text and images) should provide the historical impact and potential significance of the image. Preference will be given to previously unpublished photographs from private or public collections.

Timeline

  • Submission of a 300-word abstract and 3 to 6 images by November 1
  • Review and notification of invitation for full submission by December 1
  • Submission of completed manuscript with illustrations by February 1
  • Review process and notification of final selection by March 1
