The
Daguerreian Society

On this day (February 17) in the year 1847, the following notice
appeared in the "Boston Daily Evening Transcript":
- - - - - - -

DAGUERREOTYPES. We have seen several recent specimens of
Daguerreotype pictures taken by Messrs Southworth & Hawes, 5 1/2
Tremont Row, which were the most perfect specimens that have yet fallen
under our eye. The glare and indistinctness of the early attempts in
this art are entirely removed, and every line and lineament in the
figures are as perfectly clear and distinct as in the best engraving.
They have taken many pictures from deceased persons, and from casts of
the face, that possess a very pleasing effect, and which are really
beautiful, a counterfeit of quiet sleep, divested of the ghastliness of
death. A visit to their gallery will gratify all lovers of this
beautiful art.
