The Daguerreian Society

The Website committee has created an official banner that allows members to display their Society Membership on their eBay AboutMe page or on their website home pages:

Adding this banner to your eBay AboutMe page or to your web pages is easy (& fun!). However, you will have to know enough about HTML to insert it correctly into the HTML code of your AboutMe page on ebay, or the HTML of your web pages. (See the directions below.)

Copyright & Caveats: this banner is copyright by the Daguerreian Society. We allow use of this banner to Daguerreian Society members only, and we reserve the right to revoke permission for the use this banner at any time, for example if we feel that it is being used in conjunction with the sale of inappropriate materials or in a way that reflects badly on the Society. We grant permission for use of the banner only as described in the following directions.

Option 1. Show your Membership on your Ebay About-Me Page

Ebay's AboutMe page is intended as the area where ebay users can display more information about themselves. Please note that in general eBay places many restrictions on the display of advertising or other insignia in your auctions or other pages. The basic idea seems to be that ebay auctions are for advertising the item being sold, not anything else. So the banner we provide should not be added within eBay auctions. It is solely intended as a way for members to show their Society affiliation on their AboutMe pages, and it provides a link to our site so that the curious can find out more about the Society.

DIRECTIONS for Adding the Banner on Ebay (current as of 3/2007):

  1. Create your AboutMe Page: If you have already set up an AboutMe page for your eBay ID, a small "ME" icon will display after your user ID on most eBay pages. If you do not yet have one, you need to create your AboutMe page by >> following this link <<, logging in with your eBay ID, and following eBay's directions.
  2. Go to your AboutMe page by clicking on the "ME" icon that appears after your user ID on most ebay pages. Near the bottom of this page, follow the link for "Create or edit my About Me page", and sign in using your user ID and password.
  3. Click on the button "Edit your Page". On the next screen, click on the checkbox next to the option "Enter your own HTML code" and press the "Continue" button.
  4. On the next page, a scrolling window displays the HTML code of your AboutMe page. Paste the following 4 lines of text into the HTML code of your page where you want the banner to show up:
    <P><CENTER>
    <a href="http://daguerre.org">
    <img src="http://daguerre.org/images/dsmembanner.jpg" border=0></a>
    </CENTER><P>

  5. Press the "Continue" button and review a preview of your page and verify that the banner shows up properly. If it does not, or you wish to make other alterations to the page, hit the "Back" button to return to the previous step.
  6. When you are satisfied with the page, hit the "Submit" button to finalize your changes. Unless you hit the Submit button, your changes will not appear on eBay.
  7. Verify your changes by going to your AboutMe page. You may have to hit "reload" on your browser to see the updated version of page.

Thats it, thanks! At this point you should see the banner on your ebay page, and clicking the banner should take visitors to the Daguerreian Society home page!

Option 2. Show your Membership on your Website Pages

To add the Daguerreian Society membership banner to your personal or business web pages, simply open the page you wish to add the banner to with your webpage editing software, and insert the same text given above, where you would like the banner to appear:

<P><CENTER>
<a href="http://daguerre.org">
<img src="http://daguerre.org/images/dsmembanner.jpg" border=0></a>
</CENTER><P>

NB: You will have to be editing the actual HTML text of the page in order to insert the banner text correctly. Some webpage editing sofware may prevent this. Please check the instructions of your editing software to make sure it enables you to edit the raw HTML text of the webpage. If you are unsure, check with the technical support number provided for your editing software.
