John Brown
quarter-plate attributed to
Southworth and Hawes

An inscription which accompanies the image reads in part "Mr. John Brown sat for this likeness for me in 1856 after the Ossowatomie Affair." Brown first became publicly known after the "Pottawatomie Massacre" on May 25, 1856. This and other attacks caused Brown to visit the Eastern States for the purpose of raising money to be used in the Kansas struggle and of arousing the people against slavery. Brown was in Boston during the Winter of 1856-7 to promote his cause.
