Sixth-plate daguerreotype in embossed and gilded leather wallet with hand embroidered floral decoration in silk thread on panel of fine canvas. The closure on the wallet is a lead pencil with a shaft of turned ivory. Inside, is a notebook, with watermarked silk covers, inscribed "to Alexander Douglas from his Mother May 10 1851," From names, addresses, notes, and accounts in the notebook, it is learned that Alexander Douglas lived in Stirling in Central Scotland, and worked in a shipping office in Leith--the Port of Edinburgh.
